Statement
Life today is fractured and irrational, even rather absurd. We are perpetually bombarded with banter about sensible gun and climate policies, women’s bodily autonomy, the unceasing damage of social media, today two, maybe three, wars- much of it an endless barrage of media driven lies- all making for divisiveness and polarization. Art that is socially sensitive, targeted, or equitable to diverse perspectives is difficult to create. Recognizing and interpreting the challenges we face using the visual arts may just be one crucial avenue upon which we may find an ever more essential balance and calm in our personal spaces and connections. Indeed, both fatigue and joy can exist simultaneously with deep reflection.
Balancing and expressing the opposing feelings of fear, joy, and sorrow all in one artwork is a challenge, is one that takes me out of the comfort of employing solely traditional art elements and design principles and is imminently necessary in today's arts. I've been exploring how to incorporate and express these (and more) sentiments in nonobjective work using collage, mark making, layering and color while integrating and balancing both natural (soothing) and national/global (chaotic) environments. Primarily, I wish onlookers to interpret each piece, combining the image with experiences they bring along.
I am growing exponentially as I wrestle with each piece, investigating, discovering, changing approaches, all the time working diligently toward my expressive goal. Additionally, as we face so many dismal socio/political/environmental challenges of contemporary world, it is my hope that my continued focus will enable me to explore these unexpected influences, to understand both their impact on my work and yet to imbue each piece with an essence of hope and peace.
Thank you for looking and considering my work.
